Neuromodulators

  • Botulinum toxin type A, sometimes called “Botox” is a neuromodulator used in small amounts to help improve or erase fine lines and wrinkles temporarily. Botox was the first botulinum toxin type A to be FDA approved in 1989. Other brands include Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin.

    Typical areas treated include forehead lines, 11s, and crows feet. But, it can also be used for bunny lines, marionette lines and RBF (resting bi*** face), gummy smile, facial slimming and TMJ pain, creating a snatched jawline with Nefertiti Lift, brow lift, and lip flip.

  • Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau annd Xeomin are injected into the muscles and temporarily block the nerve signals that make the muscles contract.  It is the repetitive contractions of facial muscles over time which cause wrinkles. By preventing the muscles from contracting, fine lines and wrinkles improve or disappear temporarily.  The effects of botulinum toxin type A typically wear off in 3 months. 

  • We will review your health history, discuss your goals, and come up with a treatment plan.  Once we decide on the areas to treat, the area is cleaned off and marked, and then you will receive several tiny injections. Afterwards, you may have small raised bumps where you were injected for a hour or so, bruising is unlikely, but always possible. You may start to see results in 3-5 days after treatment, with full results visible 14 days post treatment.

FAQs

  • It depends on several factors including: which area(s) you are trying to treat (11s, forehead, crow’s feet, etc), the strength of your facial muscles, and how deep your existing lines are. We recommend a complimentary consultation with our nurse practitioner to create a plan that is right for you.

  • It may hurt a little, and we can use ice to decrease sensation, but the majority of patients tolerate treatment very well. The injection process is very quick and the needles themselves are very tiny.

  • Some redness and swelling may occur at the injection sites, but it usually subsides within a few hours. Very rarely, patients may experience minor bruising. We advise that you remain upright for at least 4 hours after treatment, and avoid rubbing the injected areas for at least 4 hours. Also, avoid facials, exercise, alcohol, sun and excess heat for at least 24 hours.

  • Results typically last around 3 months, sometimes shorter, sometimes longer, depending on dosing, the location of the treatment, your muscle activity and your body’s individual response. In general, dose equals duration, so if the area is treated at the recommended dose for full correction, you will get longer duration.

  • While Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin are all botulinum toxin type A, their chemical compositions are slightly different. It’s similar to how Advil and Motrin are both ibuprofen, but have slightly different inactive ingredient compositions. The effects are the same, but in the case of neurotoxin brands- some may be preferred in different areas, have slightly different durations, and patients may have different responses. We will come up with a plan for the product that is the best fit for you!

  • Neurotoxin injections are very common, low risk procedures. Side effects are unlikely, but of those that occur, the most common reported are headaches, bruising or swelling at the injection site. Other possible risks depend on the specific area treated, which will be discussed with you prior to treatment.

  • Avoid alcohol and NSAIDs for 48 hours prior to treatment because of increased risk for bruising.

    People who are pregnant or nursing are not eligible for neurotoxin treatment.
